Who can benefit from Herd Navigator?

All dairy herd farmers can benefit from Herd Navigator.

What will the herd manager gain and what are the perspectives?

Herd Navigator will provide the herd manager with added values in a number of areas. There will be direct cost-savings (early detection of mastitis, insemination at the optimum time, correct amount and mix of feed) increased milk production and also other values like more time and better animal welfare.

How long will it take to benefit from Herd Navigator?

That will vary a lot depending on the herd, the farm and especially on the management skills on the farm.
The effects on reproduction will in most cases give benefits right away.
Effects from ketosis management will depend on the situation on the specific farm.
Benefit from mastitis will be achieved gradually during the first 1-2 years.

How much time can I save by using Herd Navigator?

The starting point depends on the actual status on your farm and the time spent today to get an overview.

But in general, the monitoring of the herd will be moved from the herd to the computer. The herd will still need “human eyes” to secure that “nothing is wrong”.

But Herd Navigator will take away some routine jobs like looking for heats, ketosis and mastitis.

This is roughly estimated to ½ -1 hour each day, but differs a lot from one farm to another and according to the size of the herd.
In addition to that, the work on monitoring the herd will be more flexible as relates to when to do the work.

How can Herd Navigator help improve milk quality?

Herd Navigator helps to improve cow and herd health. Healthy cows produce healthy milk. The milk contains fewer somatic cells (white blood cells), bacteria and enzymes which can impact negatively the taste and shelf life.

Herd Navigator gives a total overview and pinpoints the compromised cows that can prevent the farmer of optimal milk quality. Acting on early alarms can reduce costs.

How does Herd Navigator fit with organic milk production?

No matter if you have a conventional or an organic farm, it is important to spot any disorder as early as possible in order to reduce production loss. At an organic farm however, you do not have the same options regarding treatment protocols, so this will be reflected in the farm specific Standard Operational Procedures you establish.

What will you get from the system that you cannot see today when observing changes in daily milk yield on cow level?

Daily milk yield fluctuates 6-8% on a healthy cow.
Looking at changes in daily milk yield alone will not enable you to point out a specific cause.
If you observe a bigger fluctuation/ drop in milk yield the cow is already ill and you have lost production.
The Herd Navigator concept is based on in-line measurements to support pro-active management. So, cows which are developing a health problem (ketosis, mastitis, reproductive disorders) will be pointed out before the decrease in milk yield is evident.
